Purpose

Remembers whether you picked the light or the dark theme, so the correct one is rendered by the server on the very first paint rather than flashing the wrong one.

Set when

Only when you use the theme control. If you never touch it, no cookie is ever written.

Contains

The single word light or dark. Nothing else — no identifier, nothing that could distinguish you from anyone else who prefers dark mode.

Lifetime

One year, or until you clear it.

This domain only (SameSite=Lax).

Why there is no consent banner

Consent is required for storage that is not strictly necessary. This cookie stores a setting you explicitly asked for and is used for nothing else, which is the exemption in §25(2) TTDSG. Asking permission to remember a preference you just expressed would be theatre, and the banner would collect more from you than the cookie does.

If advertising is ever introduced this stops being true, and a real consent tool has to arrive with it — before the first ad, not after.

Refusing or removing it

Leave the theme control alone and the cookie is never set. If it has been set, clearing cookies for this site removes it; the site then follows your operating system's light or dark setting, exactly as it does for a first-time visitor.
